Women in the study who drank 3-6 glasses of wine per week, more than 15 percent likely to develop breast cancer. Scientists claim is based on data taken over a period of 28 years.
This study adds the evidence about the relationship between alcohol consumption and increased of breast cancer risk. Consumption of moderate to high amounts previously been associated with risk of breast cancer, and now the effect of consumption of low amounts were scary too.
Involving 105,986 women, the study was conducted from the years 1980-2008 as part of the Nurses Health Study. All participants were asked to answer periodic questionnaires about their alcohol consumption and whether they have been diagnosed with breast cancer.
During the study period, found 7690 cases of invasive breast cancer were diagnosed. However, cases increased from 333 cases to 100,000 cases of breast cancer in women who drank 3-6 glasses of wine per week.
"The risks were found in this study are real. So although good for the heart, women still need to think about its effect on cancer risk," explains researcher Dr Wendy Chen, from Brigham Women's Hospital in Boston, USA.
